Difference between
Organic vs. Free-range eggs? 🥚 🥚

🐔 Number of hens
🐔 Truly range with continuous and easy access to the outdoors
🐔 The way they are treated
🐔 What they are fed
🐔 Use of antibiotics

Under UK’s Soil Association standards each hen is allowed a minimum of 10 square metres of space outside, compared to 4 square meters for hens reared to EU organic and free-range standards.

Soil Association certified farmers must give hens access to the outdoors at 12 weeks – a much younger age than free-range systems.

The range itself must be rested for at least 9 months between flocks to allow vegetation to grow back and prevent the build-up of disease in the soil.
In contrast, the range in free-range farms only needs to be rested for 2 months.

The outdoor range provides many behavioural opportunities for hens. It's a stimulating environment where they can explore, forage for insects, scratch around in the ground, and bathe in the sun and dust

'Beak trimming' is banned under Soil Association's organic standards. It's a mutilation that can be painful, stressful and also prevents the hens from expressing their natural behaviour by foraging. The practise is routinely performed on laying hens in the UK (including EU organic and free-range systems) to reduce the damage bird can cause to each other through 'feather pecking' which can be solved by improving welfare standards.

We made a live video of our veg box giveaway draw

We made a live video of our veg box giveaway draw last night, however for some unknown reason nobody can view it but us! 🫣

(which might be a good thing as we looked rather exhausted and couldn’t wait to get to sleep) 😴 😅

The lucky winners have been notified, (CONGRATULATIONS!) the veg boxes will be packed and distributed …aaand the life will go on with or without further (technology) mishaps.

This has been the toughest week ever.

A customer came in the other day scanning food and toiletries using this app, and we are (well… Maria is..) a bit obsessed with it now! 😅

Yuka is a free mobile app that allows you to scan the barcodes of food and personal care products, analyses them and instantly shows you their impact on your health via the rating and other detailed information.

Although not always accurate, it helps to better understand labels, increase informed purchasing, and ultimately promote healthier product choices.

‼️ SCAMMER ALERT‼️

Hedgehog Organics in Bingley, Fudge it Bingley, House of Sweets in Keighley, Lollipops Sweets & Treats in Bingley, The Yorkshire Treats Company in Harden, BP, Screwfix and many more local businesses have been targeted by the same scammer. Some recently, some repeatedly and some over the last few years.

The scammer (on the photos) is about 170cm (5’7) tall, with short dark hair and a distinctive tattoo of a rose on his right hand.

He picks a low value item, pays with a £20 note, hides the notes he gets given back and accuses the till assistant of giving him wrong change. If he doesn’t get his way, he becomes abusive and aggressive. He is so quick, the shop assistants often don’t even realise they have been scammed!

When this happened in our shop, I called the police immediately. They weren’t interested. I was told to warn others. I was also told it was our responsibility to give out the correct change and that this type of crime can’t be proved!

They are wrong! Scamming small businesses, who are already struggling as it is, is criminal and should be taken seriously.

Please help us get this vile man out of our shops! Has he been to your shop and stole off you? Please let us know so we can pass the info onto the police and the journalists!

A man with a rose tatooed on his right hand stole £25 of us today. It felt like a slap.

And then… just now… someone posted this card through our letter box, filled with rose petals, £25 and a lovely message. And it felt like an avalanche of hugs and love.

Thank you, anonymous human. People like you make this world a better place and inspire us to stay kind, thoughtful and generous.

You are absolutely right, not all roses in the world have thorns 🙏 🌹
